Hortensia – hydrangea

La motivation to work on hortensias came after Glénan-Narzissen-Projekt. The roz-kaoulet (breton) is associated fairly bien avec la Bretagne, wegen des favorite climate (compare to Faial, se transformant en l'île bleue, after introduction H. macrophylla). The most detailed description can be trouvée dans wikipedia français (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrangea). Various naturalists were involved in the 18ème siècle introducing et nommer the plants originaires d'Asie orientale à l‘Europe, with hortensia based on the latin hortus (Garten). Die fleur der 8 Unsterblichen (immortelles) has been a topic in art chinois et japonais (voir Vedger’s blog Hydrangeas – 紫陽花 – ajisai – in Japanese art and elsewhere) , see this 17th century print von Ding Liangxian:

The chinese Mustard Seed Garden Manual became popular in Japan et illustre bien comment dessiner  eine Hortensie (édition scolaire de nanga):

Im 19. Jahrhundert  the Katagami paper stencil technique became popular, voir un exemple (from the Met)

Wie zu erwarten the japanese printers Hokusaï and  Hiroshige conçus gravures d'hortensia with associated birds. Ici un Hiroshige example dating around 1845, une bonne quantité d'espace est réalisée par deux couleurs und Konturlinien

Katsushika Hokusaï‘s hydrangea und Schwalbe has less interest in volume rather  indicating colours, bleu clair, rouge clair

Starting from a standard foto d'une seule fleur i attempted eine Zeichnung um dann zu schneiden

Discouraged from the complexity i rather décidé d'utiliser deux plaques to work on the structures.

The first plate just shows Konturen and la structure principale of the individual petals

The second plate has been designed to indroduce zones ombrées to achieve some volume
