Maßkahn and chaland, travelling on rivers and canals

Binnenschiffe had defined dimensions, like the  Berliner Maßkahn, or the Breslauer Maßkahn.  The English barge goes back to 1300, from Old French barge, from Vulgar Latin barga. Chalands  sont des  bateaux à fond plat employé sur les rivières, les canaux et les rades, wikipédia).  Transport fluvial, inland navigation or Binnenschifffahrt have similitudes globales.

 To travel  from Bretagne to Berlin has been demonstrated by le groupe Nantais Royal de luxe, en 2009 « Die Riesen in Berlin », ici die kleine Riesin travelling dans les rues de Berlin im bateau NA 44873.

Der Dampfeisbrecher Anna had been built in 1911 in der Werft  "Fritz Bettin's Söhne" in Tangermünde, about 50 years ago it had been abandoned, partiell demontiert, when in 1998 the remnants were discovered and the bateau reconstructed by the family Brodthagen et leurs amis. The Nantes-Brest canal (build 1811-1858) , 364 km, est jalonné de 238 écluses dont 18 englouties, has an interesting history, well described in the german wiki (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_de_Nantes_%C3%A0_Brest), et aussi le livre:
